Japanese brand SHIRAKI KOUGEI (シラキ工芸) honors Fukuoka’s 200-year-old Yame lantern heritage through the hands of a new generation of skilled artisans. Meticulously handcrafting each piece using natural washi paper, flexible bamboo and wood, the brand seamlessly bridges historic Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary interior design.

Yame Lanterns are highly representative traditional crafts of the Yame region. They originally became famous for serving as guiding lights during the "Obon Festival" to help ancestral spirits find their way home safely without getting lost. The most distinctive feature of Yame Lanterns lies in their highly difficult and unique construction technique: artisans connect bamboo splints stretching tens of meters using washi paper, and then hand-wind them spirally into shape. This exclusive technique is known as "single-spiral coiling."
