“In a certain Indian town, everyone I passed on the street was carrying one of these bags. Made from scraps of fabric from tents and awnings, they seem to be highly valued for carrying things due to their low cost and sturdiness. The uneven stitching , the handle’s a mix of navy and black that are hard to distinguish, and the occasional stains might displease many Japanese people, but I felt a charm that you can't find in brand new items. When I asked about the meaning of the numbers written on the bag, it seemed to indicate the size. "36 is from this end to this end," I was told, but I didn't really understand the units, and no matter what I measured, the size didn't match. It's so typically Indian, and that's part of its charm.”
