The rush of high economic growth and a new found passion for fashion during the 20s in Japan inspired many Japanese people to bring their lunches to work for the first time. Recognizing this trend, Takenaka soon began producing beautifully crafted bento boxes, hand-painted on the outside with colorful lacquer for the people to carry proudly. Takenaka’s simple, hand polished designs soon sparked a rise in the popularity of bento style lunch boxes, and with time, they became a trend of their own.

Takenaka was founded in the Yamanaka Onsen district of the city of Kaga known for its long history of lacquerware craftsmanship, which is one of Japan’s oldest traditional crafts. Takenaka has taken this ancient technique and applied it to a variety of products. For over a hundred years, we've produced quality bento boxes with the aim to enhance meal time and create a more sustainable future.
